Guidance for Families

Making decisions about care for an aging loved one is rarely simple. Questions often arise gradually, and many families feel unsure about when—or whether—assisted living is the right next step.

This page is meant to offer clarity, not pressure. Our goal is to help families think through common questions with honesty and care.

How to Know When Assisted Living May Be Needed

There is rarely a single moment when assisted living suddenly becomes necessary. More often, families notice small changes that begin to affect safety, health, or quality of life.

Assisted living may be worth considering when you observe:

  • Difficulty with bathing, dressing, or personal hygiene

  • Missed medications, confusion around dosing, or medication errors

  • Trouble preparing meals or noticeable weight loss

  • Increasing falls, balance issues, or mobility challenges

  • Growing isolation, anxiety, or withdrawal from daily life

  • Caregiver fatigue or burnout within the family

Choosing assisted living does not mean giving up independence. For many individuals, it provides relief — removing daily stress and allowing them to focus on comfort, relationships, and rest.

What is respite care?

Respite care is short-term assisted living designed to support both seniors and the people who care for them.

Families often consider respite care:

  • Following a hospitalization or illness

  • During travel or temporary caregiving gaps

  • When a caregiver needs rest or recovery

  • As a way to experience assisted living before making a long-term decision

At Mt. Sterling Place, respite stays offer the same level of care, attention, and home-like environment as long-term residency — simply for a shorter period of time. Even a brief stay can provide stability, safety, and peace of mind.

Why a homelike environment matters as we age.

As people grow older, familiarity becomes increasingly important. Changes in environment can be disorienting, stressful, and emotionally difficult — especially when care is involved.

A home-like setting helps preserve:

  • A sense of identity and belonging

  • Emotional comfort and stability

  • Dignity and personal routines

  • Independence within safe boundaries

Mt. Sterling Place was intentionally designed to feel like a home, not a facility. From shared meals to familiar faces, we believe care should support the whole person — not just their physical needs.

For many residents, feeling “at home” allows them to relax, engage, and maintain a sense of self even as their needs change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Read more here, or give us a call!

  • We offer the basic essentials many seniors need to live safely and comfortably. This includes help with bathing, dressing, mobility, medication management, meals, housekeeping, and daily supervision. Our focus is on consistency, dignity, and attentiveness.

We do assist in coordinating with your third party care providers, like physical therapy and hospice care, to come on site if when those needs arise.

If a person requires advanced medical care, we are always honest about whether Mt. Sterling Place is an appropriate fit.

  • Mt. Sterling Place is not a medical facility. While management has medical experience, most day-to-day care is provided by trained caregivers rather than licensed medical staff. We coordinate with outside providers as needed and communicate closely with families.

  • No. Mt. Sterling Place is a private-pay assisted living home and does not accept Medicare or Medicaid. Many families choose Mt. Sterling Place because our private-pay rates are significantly more affordable than larger assisted living facilities in the Columbus metro area.

  • Yes. All residents have private rooms with private bathrooms, offering both comfort and dignity.

Our one-story layout makes the home easy to navigate and helps residents feel safe and at ease.

  • Life here is calm and unhurried. Residents enjoy home-cooked meals, time in shared living spaces, television, conversation, and sitting outdoors on the porch. Staff provide daily interaction and companionship in a familiar, family-style setting.

This is a quieter environment, designed for residents who prefer simplicity and routine.

  • Mt. Sterling Place does not offer structured or large-scale activity programming.

Instead, we focus on meaningful daily interaction, familiar routines, and a peaceful environment. Staff spend time with residents throughout the day, offering companionship and support.

This approach works especially well for individuals who do best in quieter, less stimulating settings.
